Founder and Executive Director

Jeff Golden is a former Fulbright scholar in "Sustainable Development Studies" and has presented twice at international symposiums on "The Environment and International Security" and "The Militarization of the Third World". He has five years teaching experince in inner-city schools in South-Central Los Angeles and San Francisco, including San Francisco's first start-up charter school, Leadership High. He has lived and traveled throughout Latin America and China and speaks Spanish, functional Chinese, and is studying Arabic.

Philip Vincent Arca, M.A. Corporate Sponsorships
Mr. Arca has over fifteen years of management experience in the not-for-profit sector, including most recently 8 years as the Executive Director of Oakland Zoo where he negotiated numerous successful corporate sponsorships. Mr. Arca is the founder of Arca and Associates Management Consulting and is an affiliate consultant for The Support Center of San Francisco and Lord Cultural Resources.

Lisa Cohen, M.Ed. International Service & Education
Ms. Cohen is currently Field Development Coordinator with AFS, a leading high school exchange program. She has also worked with WorldTeach and sits on an Advisory Board for the Overseas Development Network and the Northern District Board for Region XII of NAFSA, the Association of International Educators.

Thomas P. Gilliss, Esq. Legal Advisor
Mr. Gilliss is Partner and co-founder at the law firm of Gilliss & Valla. He is a Past President and Director of San Francisco School Volunteers, past Director and Vice President of the National Society to Prevent Blindness, and currently serves as a Director of Pacific Bay Bank, of Prevent Blindness-Northern California, and of The Fund for Arthritis and Infectious Disease Research.

Carol Kleinmaier, M.A. Administrative & Program Development
Ms. Kleinmaier is the Executive Director for Kairos, Support for Caregivers. She has been on the Board of Directors, including co-chair, of the Tenderloin AIDS Resource and on the Board of the Institute for Community Health Outreach. She was Support Group Coordinator for the UCSF AIDS Health Project and the Shanti Project, a teacher for six years and coordinator of the Adult Competency Education Program in San Francisco.

Mark Kushner, Esq., J.D., M. Ed. Education Program
Mr. Kushner is Principal and Founder of Leadership High School, San Francisco's first start-up charter high school. An attorney, high school English teacher, and tennis coach, he currently serves on the Board of Trustees of San Francisco's University High School and the California Network of Educational Charters.

Alejandro Montenegro, Ph.D. Administrative & Program Development
Dr. Montenegro has twelve years of experience in top supervisory positions in Education and Mental Health Services. He served as Director of In-country Training for numerous U.S. Peace Corps programs in Central and South America, the Caribbean and the U.S and has taught at universities in South America, England, and the U.S.

Cory Smith Technologies - Media Production and Webcasting
Founder of Webcast Solutions (recently acquired by Star Media) specializing in live, on-location Internet broadcasting, Cory has co-produced webcasts for Mercury, Sony, Bluenote & Atlantic Records, Hewlett-Packard, Sun, Tandem and Softbank. Through UNESCO's World Heritage Center, Cory produced and recorded audio, video and photography of World Heritage Sites in Mexico, Indonesia, Egypt, Israel and Holland. He produced the first live webcast for UNESCO in Paris and the first live webcast from the Presidential Palace in Indonesia featuring the President of Indonesia and the Presidents of Fiji and of Namibia.

Michael Stein Website Maintenance & International Connectivity
Mr. Stein is Internet Coordinator for Children Now and a consultant for the Support Center for Nonprofit Management. He is also the author of Fundraising on the Internet, and co-author of Aether Madness: An Offbeat Guide to the Online World. He has worked as an activist for numerous environmental organizations and most recently was the LaborNet Program Coordinator for the Institute for Global Communications.

Larry Yang, M.A. Administrative & Program Development
Mr. Yang is a medical social worker with the City and County of San Francisco. He has served on the Board of Directors for Kairos House, and worked with ACTUP/Golden Gate, The San Francisco AIDS Foundation, Shanti Project, Hospice by the Bay, Catholic Charities, the California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs, and the Asian and Pacific Islander Wellness Center. Mr Yang was also the co-founder of an award-winning marketing communications company.

The US Trek Team

Kevin Chambers, age 23, is a native of Los Angeles and graduated with a BS in Communications from the University of Southern California. While there he was awarded the Maxine Waters Academic Achievement Resolution Award and started an online publication to unify the racial diverse student population. In 1994 he was among the first group of students selected to travel to Seoul, Korea as American Ambassadors in a cultural exchange program to better race relations between African-Americans and Korean-Americans.

Stephanie Elizondo Griest, age 26, graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a BJ in journalism and a BA in post-Soviet studies from the University of Texas at Austin. A Chicana from South Texas, she has written for dozens of publications including the New York Times and the Washington Post, has studied in Moscow and taught journalism in Beijing on a Henry Luce Scholarship. She speaks Russian, Mandarin and Spanish and is currently writing a book about her travels across the communist bloc.

Neda Farzan, 22 years old, recently graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University with a BA in Human Biology with a concentration in children’s health policy. She has interned with the U.S. Congress House Subcommittee on Africa and the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning & Evaluation at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She is fluent in Farsi and French. She has diverse experience working with youth as a high school teacher, mentor, and child advocate.

Rebecca Kroll at age 24 has just finished two years teaching fifth grade in Long Beach, California with Teach for America. She has worked to motivate at-risk youth through The Resurrection Project and College Bound and received a $1,500 IBJ Global Vision Grant for her fifth grade classroom. She has traveled around the world, including time with Semester at Sea and the Earthwatch Institute. She is also an accomplished photographer and an avid rock climber.

Teddy Miller, a self-titled "Altruistic Journalist Adventurer", is also a 21 year-old undergrad at Berkeley. He has spent most of his natural life in Berkeley, CA. He attended a French/American bilingual school, the infamous Berkeley High, and now studies history and economics at the University. His travels have brought him around the world with stays in 23 countries. He has met figures as diverse as Fidel Castro to Robert MacNamera to Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi. His future plans are to go to law school and fight for social justice at home and abroad. Whenever he is home Teddy enjoys debates with his 95-year old grandmother "Moo" and walks with his beloved Airedale "Arthur".

Irene Lin, 24 years old, graduated from Amherst College with a BA in American Studies. She spent one year volunteering as a reporter and trade policy research assistant in Harare, Zimbabwe. She has interned at the Center for Public Integrity, People Magazine, Washington Week in Review and A. Magazine. She was awarded the New York Times James Reston Portfolio Award for non-fiction writing.

Daphne Sorensen, 24 years old, is a self proclaimed "citizen of the world" - a Brazilian with an American accent and a British sense of humor who likes to dance merengue. She has worked on development projects in Brazil and Africa, including organizing the 1998 AIDS Walk in Uganda. She holds a BA in International Studies and Economics from American University in Washington and speaks Portuguese, Spanish, English and French.

Nick Tilsen, 18 years old, is a tribal member of the Oglala Lakaota Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and an environmental activist. He has participated in grassroots campaigns for such organizations as Honor The Earth, Eyak Preservation Fund and Farm Aid, and has been active in seeking justice for imprisoned Native American activist, Leonard Peltier. He works seasonally as a commercial fisherman in Alaska and is an avid hockey player.
